The coenzyme moves between its oxidized NAD+ form and reduced NADH form. By accepting and donating electrons during redox reactions, it connects nutrient metabolism with mitochondrial ATP production and the energy required for normal cellular activity.
NAD+ is produced from amino acids and recycled from the breakdown products of pyridine nucleotides.
